Perinatal Mental Health Group in West Dorset Celebrates it's First Birthday
Over three years ago a group of professionals came together to create a new service dedicated to helping women suffering from moderate to severe mental health conditions before and after having a baby.
The group included representatives from midwifery, mental health, psychiatry and general practice, as well as women who had suffered from mental health conditions surrounding childbirth.
After more than a year of hard work, conversation and collating funding, the service finally began a year ago and today they celebrated their 1-year-anniversary.
Prior to the service starting, any woman suffering from anxiety, depression, psychosis, PTSD, OCD, or other conditions in the antenatal or postnatal period had only general mental health services to help them and often they are not fit for purpose.
West Dorset are now in the minority of trusts across the UK to have a service fit for women who need to use it and are very proud of it. There is still some way to go to provide women of Dorset with all of the support that they need but it has been a fabulous start.
Happy Birthday West Dorset's Perinatal Mental Health Team! May there be many more birthdays to come.
