Food and your mental health

July 30, 2017

Did you know that if you eat a healthy and balanced diet it may help maintain your mental health?

There is a great amount of evidence to suggest a link between eating unhealthily and having a mental health condition.

Annoyingly when we are feeling depressed or anxious we often alter our eating habits. Some of us may stop eating, some may over eat and some may focus on eating comfort food. All are common ways of us finding coping strategies.

However, in order to stay on the road to recovery it might be worth assessing what you are eating and make tweaks to stay mentally well as well as physically well.

An article published by mentalhealth.org.uk reports that, 'nearly two thirds of those who do not report daily mental health problems eat fresh fruit or fruit juice every day, compared with less than half of those who do report daily mental health problems'.

In addition they suggest, 'Those who report some level of mental health problem also eat fewer healthy foods... and more unhealthy foods (chips and crisps, chocolate, ready meals and takeaways)'.

Take a look at the article, it makes for interesting reading and perhaps think twice before reaching for the Dairy Milk when you are feeling at your lowest.
